Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

It Is Enough

If you can’t see what you are looking for, see what is there. – Mark Nepo
When is something enough?
Something is enough when I am present. Something is enough when I am filled with excitement and energy and passion. Something is enough when I create and build and connect. Something is enough when smack dab in the middle of it, even if I can’t exactly see the end, I persist. Something is enough when it feels so important it is guided by focus and clarity and direction. Something is enough when it is surrounded in satisfaction and comfort and wholeness. Something is enough when it has become a constant in the seasons of my life. Somethings is enough when it is simple, not chaotic or dramatic or contrived.
When do I feel enough?
I recently finished my 12th half marathon. I feel enough during races. I feel enough because my body is ready for the task. I feel enough because it reinforces my proven ability to start and finish. I feel enough because the race is not easy and that does not stand in my way. I feel enough because my heart and head simply know I can do it every step of the way, even the painful and trying steps.
How do I find enough?
Finding enough starts with seeing inches of progress when there are miles to cover. Finding enough is growth and learning. Finding enough fills and sustains. Finding enough tells the truth.Finding enough means seeing what is there. There is huge power in seeing what is there, rather than what I am looking for. That is an important distinction. Seeing what is there requires real honestly with myself and others. Seeing what is there requires the kind of reflection that takes practice. Seeing what is there requires the kind of courage known by seeds and rainbows and butterflies and waterfalls and newborns.
