“Faith” is a fine invention
“Faith” is a fine invention/ When Gentlemen can see – But Microscopes are prudent/ In an Emergency.
Emily Dickinson
I have a toolbox of Microscopes from which to see “Faith.” (My toolbox includes story, creativity, patience, stillness, breath, humility, prayer, and exercise.) I imperfectly turn to these tools in Emergencies. What I am learning to do — inch by inch, moment by moment, day by day — is to use these tools consistently enough that my Emergencies are more like ocean tides than earthquakes.
Microscopes help us alleviate fear. Scientists use microscopes to see and understand small objects, even (especially) objects at the cellular level. Being able to see helps the scientist make discoveries and solve problems with less fear of negative consequences and/or failure. More knowledge and understanding means less fear. I want to suggest Microscopes and “Faith” work the same way. Using Microscopes can reduce our fears, thereby strengthen our “Faith.”
