Aimless Love
But my heart is always standing on its tripod,
ready for the next arrow.
From Billy Collins’ “Aimless Love“
I fall in love 1,000 times a day. Falling in love, in this context, is about paying attention, wonder, amazement, joy, curiosity, and all things miraculous. It’s about butterflies, road races, chocolate, cabernet, cats purring, cheese, and warm bread. It’s about old friends, mentors, strangers, artists, and athletes. It’s about music, the sunset, the sunrise, roots, buds, and blooms. It’s about the possible, abundance, grace, the coming together, and the falling apart.
I disagree with Collin’s. Aimless love is not really aimless. There is always a point to love. Even a wandering love has direction. Even a lighthearted love has weight. Even a casual love has formal significance. Even a meek love has power. Even a distant love feels close.
Love works like that. Love is the sun that warms us. Love is the small stone we carry. Love is the empty bowl we welcome. Love is the wide eyes that see. Love is the story that connects. Love is the open heart that heals. That is love’s clear aim.
