God’s World
As stretcheth me apart,—Lord, I do fear
From “God’s World” by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Thou’st made the world too beautiful this year;
My soul is all but out of me,—let fall
No burning leaf; prithee, let no bird call.
The world is truly beautiful. Sometimes, amidst life’s cruelty and falling apart, it is easy to miss beauty. Paying attention to it all is somehow both painful and important. Paying attention is the story. Paying attention is the tie that binds. Surrounded by the omniscient whisper of leaves on fire and the deciduous promise of growth, I stand amazed. Amazed at change and flow. Amazed at perception and reality. Amazed at soft gentle places to land and love. That is God’s world. I have heard it said that imagination makes empathy possible. Somewhere in yellow and red. Somewhere in cool air and breath that can almost be seen. Somewhere in approaching sleep that tucks us in to peaceful slumber. There is imagination. May empathy emerge.
