Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

My pair of feet
Mina Loy, Songs to Joannes, VII
Smack the flag-stones
That are something left over from your walking
The wind stuffs the scum of the white street
Into my lungs and my nostrils
Exhilarated birds
Prolonging flight into the night
Never reaching — — — — — — —
This poem reminds me of the beauty in putting one foot in front of the other. Putting one foot in front of the other means embracing my pace. Putting one foot in front of the other means I hit my stride. Putting one foot in front of the other means I am always in an ebb and flow. Putting one foot in front of the other means I am never stuck. Putting one foot on front of the other means I am more about hope than fear. Putting one foot in front of the other means I don’t give up. Putting one foot in front of the other is about aspiration and desire and direction.
Behind means something different in a one foot in front of the other world. Behind means the breadth of experience. Behind means beautiful and hard memories. Behind means growth that has yet to happen. Behind can be permission to step, a road block to moving forward, the foundation of wisdom on which the future is built.
