Testify
i stand before you to say
Eve L. Ewing, “testify“
that today i walked home
& caught the light through
the fence & it was so golden
i wanted to cry
I woke up this morning grateful. Grateful for it all. Grateful to be surrounded in possibility. Grateful that I am enough. Grateful for tears. For things that I wrote years ago being meaningful to people today. Grateful for the bakeries and birthdays. Grateful for cat purrs and new perfume. Grateful for abiding faith and kindness all around. Grateful for friends who teach me to bloom where I am planted, and to always hope. Grateful for second and third and fourth chances. Grateful for connection and time. Grateful for strength that emerges. Grateful for soft hearts and vulnerability. Grateful for poetry and prayer.
Mary Oliver instructs us to pay attention, be amazed, and tell about it. Telling about it is the heart of testifying. Telling about it means we see it all and share our stories. Telling about it means we don’t keep amazement and love to ourselves. Telling about it means we invite others to feel amazement and love, too. Telling about it amplifies good. Telling about is abundance. Telling about it shines light.
