Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

The poet is in my ear, take notes, take notes, notes, notes, yes, notes.
S. Brook Corfman
I live with a poet in my ear. I live with a muse in my soul. I live paying attention and taking notes.
Sometimes the poet screams telling me to do this or that. Sometimes the poet whispers reminding me to return to my breath. Sometimes the poet sings and I feel light and get lost in the words and melody. Sometimes the poet tells a story and pulls me in and I become part of a whole I both know and don’t know. Sometimes the poet guides my fingers and my words are not my own. Sometimes the poet tells me honest truth. Sometimes the poet tells me sweet lies. Sometimes the poet tells me what I already know. Sometimes the poet tells me what I need to hear. Sometimes the poet weeps feeling the pain of the world. Sometimes the poet sits silent in awe at the beauty of it all.
