Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

Evening

Another word I love is evening/ for the balance it implies, balance
Jeremy Radin, Evening
being something I struggle with.
At this point in my life, I understand the beauty of evening. I frame evening in the wisdom that comes from years, the quiet that comes from a life well lived, and the beauty that comes from scar tissue and wrinkles. Evening as leveling off. Evening as taking stock. Evening as a steady heartbeat.
I definitely struggle with balance. I fall prey to all or nothing thinking, blank journal pages, and broken promises. All of that is a kind of off balance. So much feels off balance right now in our world. Cruelty is off balance. Violence is off balance. War is off balance. There is so much off balance that evening can feel out of reach.
Perhaps balance is found in evening? Maybe if we breathe deeply enough, together, we can find balance. Maybe if our actions are intentional and loving everyday, we can find balance. Maybe if we connect peace and justice, we can find balance.
