Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

Forever – is composed of Nows – (690)

Forever – is composed of Nows –/ ‘Tis not a different time –/ Except for Infiniteness –/ And Latitude of Home –
Emily Dickinson, Forever – is composed of Nows – (690)
There is responsibility in Now. The immediacy of consequences. The in-your-faceness of results. The steely, knowing stare of truth. The adding up of habit and consistency and ritual. The subtraction of what ifs and not yets.
What if Now is about grace? The power of paying attention. The flexibility of forgiveness. The limitlessness of compassion and full throated honesty. The expansion of a heart that allows love in.
I want to think about forever. About God and The Infinite and Home. The possibility of impermanence. The beginner’s mind. Figure and ground. The butterfly effect. Blue glaciers and parrots speaking. Kaleidoscopes and wind chimes.
My forever composition would be a symphony of banjos and mandolins. Lyrics and poetry. Harmony and dissonance so beautiful it all makes sense. In that way, Now is a song.
