All I Want
I want to be strong I want to laugh along
From Joni Mitchell’s, “All I Want” from Blue
I want to belong to the living
Alive, alive, I want to get up and jive
I want to wreck my stockings in some juke box dive
Do you want – do you want – do you want to dance with me baby
Do you want to take a chance
On maybe finding some sweet romance with me baby
Well, come on
This song is about belonging to the living, wrecking stockings, taking chances, and sweet romance. It is about clarity of intention and living big. It is about knowing and asking for everything you want. It is about love with shame. It is about people who move between love and hate, kindness and cruelty, companionship and loneliness, freedom and boundaries.
This is a love letter to the self. A note about basic commitments to ourselves that we easily break. A step toward paying attention in a fast moving world. A banishment of fear for faith. A vindication of simple needs. An affirmation of the life’s mess and beauty. A challenge to our not yet self. A statement that all we are is enough.
