The Chickadees Are All Up in Our Feelings
Scientists say/ a larger hippocampus serves the species well in the season of remembering,/ when stored cells grow and die,/ replenishing through winter’s hunger,/ when the chickadees return to flit and fly/ to every buried need.
Sarah Carey, The Chickadees Are All Up in Our Feelings
This is a season of remembering. A time of cells growing and dying, taking stock, shedding, molting, and letting go. A time of cycles, order, enough, and softness. A time of forward motion through, rather than around.
Every year, as fall approaches, holidays — global in reach, spanning gods and beliefs — encourage us to reflect and learn. They point us toward fullness and grace. They comfort us as we hug hard edges and truths. They speak the language of peace and amends. They shine under the light of a harvest moon.
There is a natural order. Hunger and sustenance. Light and dark. Beginnings and endings. Fire and water. That is what the chickadees know.
