Creed
I believe in birdsong that persists through winter and heartsong that keeps the land beating through droughts, rains, snows, love, loss, betrayal.
From Shebana Coelho’s “Creed“
I believe in immenseness, space and a spirit I have found again, by another name,
in another guise.
I believe. Finally, I believe.
I memorized the Apostle’s Creed as a child. It has always felt important to know what I believe. To have faith in something larger and act accordingly. To know something deep in my heart. To hold a sense of wonder. To feel connected to others.
I suppose that is what Coelho means by creed. A creed is a commitment to notice and be amazed. A creed is a foundation for daily life. A creed is a guidebook for decisions. A creed is a set of shared principles. A creed is spirituality writ large.
If I was to write my own personal creed, it would have to include honesty, joy, and curiosity. It would have to include relationships, nature, and purpose. It would have to include imperfection, impermanence, and spontaneity. It would have to include perseverance, pace, and patience. It would have to include spirit, grace, and stillness.
