Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

Dancing Toward Bethlehem

just as the floor of the nineteenth century gave way
From Billy Collins’ “Dancing Toward Bethlehem“
and disappeared in a red cloud of brick dust.
There will be no time to order another drink
or worry about what was never said,
Today is a dance toward Bethlehem. Breath is quick and shallow. Sight is short and filled with shadows. Strength lives in fits and starts. Time is fluid and impermanent. Collins’ does not dance toward a random place of no significance. He dances toward Bethlehem.
I find hopeful urgency in dancing toward Bethlehem. The birthplace of love manifest. Miracles happen here. Miracles are needed here. Love in a cruel world. Love in a world on the edge. Love and history. Love and beginning. Love and beauty. Love and grace. We can dance — and love — in Bethlehem.
