Estranged from Beauty – none can be-
Estranged from Beauty – none can be -/ For Beauty is Infinity -/ And power to be finite ceased/ Before identity was leased.
Emily Dickinson
I am grateful that we are all connected to Beauty in a deep down, molecular, big, cosmic way. I am grateful that Beauty is Infinity like stars, sand, whales, and butterflies. I am grateful that Beauty’s arms are wide enough to embrace us all. That is comforting in a world where age can make Beauty feel finite, definitions can make Beauty feel rigid, and identity can make Beauty feel separate.
Truth is not estranged from Beauty. As Keats suggests, “Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all/ Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” Maybe Truth meets Beauty at the point of Infinity? Maybe Truth and Beauty are constructs thrust upon us that melt away with time? Maybe Truth and Beauty are simple answers offered to difficult questions? Both are complex and evolving. Both are situated and left up to particular eyes and ears. Both have a distinct smell and taste and feel that we know. There is a bit of solace there. They are all we need to know.
