Weekly Wide-Awake: Fall Into the Beltline
I walk on the Beltline 4 or 5 times a week. I have learned a lot about paying attention from the Beltline. Paying attention to the seasons. Paying attention to the people. Paying attention to the city and the forest. Paying attention to the sights, smells, and sounds. Part refuge. Part celebration. Part memory. Part gallery. Part quiet. Part song. The Beltline was one of the reasons we chose to move to Atlanta, and it continues to be a touchstone for our daily lives.
This week, I decided to highlight a few of the posts I have written about art of the Beltline in Weekly Wide-Awake. The art on the Beltline is a constant reminder to pay attention to the details of life. The syllables of steel that form words and stories. The beauty of light hitting sculptures at certain times of day. The questions asked by murals. The broken parts of rail road ties that become whole figures. Those details matter.
It seems fitting to think about the lessons of the Beltline in fall. When we take time to gather, shed, share, and thank. When darkness creeps into the edges of our days. When our hearts prepare for the birth of a new year. When we think about bounty and blessings. The Beltline — its art, trees, people — is all of that.
