Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

From “In the Same Light”
Icy blossoms blow about,/ disparate each to each.
Wong May
How do ice and blossoms blow about? How do we find meaning in love? How do we have faith in prayer? How do we understand blossoms, love, and prayer knowing life is as big as seasons and tides and galaxies.
Through it all there is order. The falling apart and back together happens in perfect time. Ice thaws and flowers bloom. Love is found in life’s sweetness and sadness. Prayers are raised lifting heart and soul.
There is comfort in order. There is comfort in knowing the center holds. There is comfort in feeling life’s rhythm. There is comfort in blooming and loving and praying. We can see it all unfold in the same light.
