I shall keep singing
I shall keep singing!/ Birds will pass me/ On their way to Yellower Climes -/ Each – with a Robin’s expectation – I with my Redbreast -/ And my Rhymes -// Late – when I take my place in summer -/ But – I shall bring a fuller tune -/ Vespers – are sweeter than Matins – Signor -/ Morning – only the seed of Noon –
Emily Dickinson
Vespers are sweeter than matins. Prayers offered in the evening, after the hope of morning rests on the wings of experience, are sweeter than prayers offered in the morning. Find the same hope and faith at sunset that is offered at sunrise. Singing. Knowing our song and singing must happen from sun up to sundown. We must know our Rhymes. Prayer must be our constant and abiding song. The apostle Paul asks us to pray without ceasing. The kind of prayer poet Ruth Forman’s mother spoke about when she talked about prayers like shoes. Prayer like St. Francis suggests when he asks us to be instruments of peace. Prayer like Meister Eckhart reminds, “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.”
