Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

I Wish

I wish to see/ your magnificence/ even in the prayers left unanswered.
F.S. Yousaf
To see magnificence in prayers left unanswered. To feel joy in the midst of sadness. To witness miracles in the everyday. To be heartbroken with grief and still seek connection. To understand the relationship between truth and contradiction. This is the heart of life’s falling apart and coming back together. We hold it all. We are multitudes.
That is the real wish. That is the real gift. To love ourselves and others because of it all. Love in the midst of unanswered prayers, sadness, the everyday, grief, and contradiction. love in the midst of it all. That is our challenge as we are blinded by our rightness, weakened by our rigidity, paralyzed by our anger, and caged by our smallness. Life’s sweetness lives within all that.
