What’s Inside the Ground
Whatever gives pleasure is the fragrance/ of the Friend. Whatever makes us wonder// comes from that light. What’s inside the/ ground begins to sprout because you spilled// wine there. What dies in autumn comes up/ in spring because this way of saying no// becomes in spring your praise song yes.
Rumi
I love the thought that wonder comes from the light of friendship’s fragrance. I love the thought that things grow from spilled wine. I love the thought that fall is no and spring is yes. That makes sense to me in the way that fish are born knowing how to swim, butterflies know when to emerge from their cocoon, and the sun rises and sets. There is a perpetual yes and no to all that. What else comes from that light, spilled wine, and yes and no? Gratitude? Humility? Compassion? Grace? Maybe those are the ingredients of wonder itself. Maybe friendship moves between earth and air and sweetly breathes and enters the world as wonder.
