Ireland: Day 5 — Dublin to Clifden, by way of Galway
Day 5 was mainly about getting from Dublin to Clifden by way of Galway. We rented a car in Dublin. (Notes to self: rent an automatic, budget for insurance, there is generally no shoulder on rural Irish roads, and make sure your phone battery is charged to power GPS and music streaming because your car may not have a USB port.)
Galway
Greg drove on the left side of the road in a steady rain for more than three hours and we arrived in Galway. (The Macnas mural I spotted when we parked in Galway is the feature image to this post.) Our first stop was 800 year old Kings Head pub. Live music and conversation flowed. We learned about toasties — which are basically ham sandwiches in a plastic bag cooked in a toaster — at our second stop, Murphy’s Pub. Our last stop, McDonagh’s, has wonderful fish and chips and is right in the heart of the Galway action.
The Ardagh
After another hour and a half driving on the left side of a narrow road with no shoulder in even more rain, we arrived at the Ardagh in Clifden. The sun was setting. It was just about 8:30 and we could still see Clifden Bay through the rain drops and windows. As we walked into the hotel, we were warmly welcomed, immediately ushered our bags to our room, and headed downstairs for a night cap at the fireside bar.
