New Life Starts in the Dark
…new life starts in the dark. Whether it is a seed in the ground, a baby in the womb, or Jesus in the tomb, it starts in the dark.
Barbara Brown Taylor
In the heart of October, I am thinking about new life. I am thinking about the connection between seeds and harvest. I am thinking about the connection between a baby and birth. I am thinking about the connection between death and resurrection.
I believe in common resurrections. In resurrections that look like an open mind, an unclenched fist, a deep breath. In resurrections that look like what happens (occasionally) in my soul while writing something that brings me to tears. In resurrections that look like stepping outside myself and connecting with others.
Resurrections are absolutely and fundamentally about miracles that happen in the dark, when we are asleep and unable or unwilling, when we are physically tired and suffer from hope fatigue, when love is the last thing on our mind. Those resurrections are little darkness miracles. They are the powerful stuff of invention and transformation, of imagination and beginnings, of life itself.
