Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

Noon

The noon, a mystic dog with paws of fire,
Harindranath Chattopadhyaya, Noon
Runs through the sky in ecstasy of drouth,
Licking the earth with tongue of golden flame
Set in a burning mouth.
I measure my days in noons. Let me explain. I wake up with the thought to seize the day. Thirsty with ambition, swimming in thoughts and lists, trying to break through the muck of noise and overwhelm. I try to follow a calendar, live a routine, and head to noon. At noon, the sun is in full force. I take the temperature of my fire.
If noon is a thirsty, mystic dog with paws of fire, heading toward sundown with abandon and resolve, I ask myself about my fire? Why did I start reading Atomic Habits weeks ago and not finished the book? Why do I have yet another barely used day planner? What good are goals with out follow through?
I want to be consumed with noon’s fire. I want to run my race, fully aware of my pace and still finding my edge. I want to be gentle on my mind and have a fierce heart. At noon, a day can still be one. At noon, I can turn it around. At noon, I can get a drink of water, course correct, and press on.
