Perhaps the World Ends Here
“The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live.”
from Joy Harjo’s “Perhaps the World Ends Here“
Kitchen tables are powerful. Our lives are filled with kitchen tables. Kitchen tables possess a miraculous capacity. Our capacity to nourish and sustain, support and embrace, seek and understand, see and know, love and heal can be built at the kitchen table. I have shared many kitchen tables over the years. Family. Friends. Colleagues. Readers. Students. Miracles have happened at each kitchen table. From truth and forgiveness to birth and death, miracles happen. Tables have exponential potential. Like ripples on water and butterfly wings, even the most minor action changes the world.
As long as we have kitchen tables, we have hope. We have grace as long as we have a space to come together. We can always build a new kitchen table. We have compassion as long as we have faith in the substance of our interdependence. Perhaps hope, grace, and mercy are where it all begins and ends.
