Playing the Long Game: Ohio Prepares for Sports Gaming
The first clinical treatment center to address gambling addiction in the United States opened at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Brecksville, Ohio, in 1972 under the guidance of Dr. Robert Custer. Dr. Custer, a leader in the theory and practice of treating gambling addiction, was integral to the listing of compulsive gambling as a psychological disorder in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1980. As evidenced by Dr. Custer’s work — and the work that has expanded well beyond Brecksville — the state of Ohio has played an essential role in the research and treatment of gambling addiction for many years.
