Weekly Wide-Awake: Reverence, Taught
Careful of stuck door, breath-held/ I lift heavy stacks of mother’s precious china.
From Reverence Taught — Sherry Shenoda
This week I am thinking about reverence. In what ways are reverence and holy related? Is it possible to learn reverence? How do we practice reverence in our day-to-day lives? What does reverence look like?
We moved into our new home a few months ago. Small pieces of family china from generations can be found throughout our house. I intend to collect more of our family china as we continue to settle. Part remembrance, part invitation, part celebration, having the precious china fill our space feels like a dialogue that continues beyond time and space. We are asking those that have gone before us to continue to walk with us. Maybe that is reverence?
I also want to say a word to the recent graduates in my life. Each of the posts this week holds a bit of advice. Read each and know how much I surround your futures in health, joy, and love. May you know reverence.
I look to poetry to consider a few questions. The precision of poetry focuses my language. The beauty of poetry inspires my exploration. The timeliness of poetry wakes me up every day. I have been selecting three poems a day and writing about them within my morning pages. My blog has developed out of my morning pages.
