Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

Weakness

Our strength will continue if we allow ourselves the courage to feel scared, weak and vulnerable. – Melody Beattie
I have been thinking about weakness on my journey to know what it means to love and be loved in this life.
I have been thinking about establishing loving boundaries and how boundaries are antithetical to weakness. I have been thinking about being seen and the enormous strength that comes from being seeing and seeing others. I have been thinking about telling the truth and the weakness of telling a lie. I have been thinking about risk and reward, and the courage involved in weakness. I have been thinking about soft hearts and how I find no weakness there. I have been thinking about what it means to live a life and how to truly live a life you have to have the courage.
I have been thinking of strength in the natural world.
Palm trees that stand during a hurricane. The plant on our balcony that was dead until we cared for it and pruned it and it came back to life. (Pruning the sick branches allowed the strength of the healthy branches to emerge.) Irises that bloom in the snow. Monarch butterflies that migrant great distances. Birds that fly in perfection formation. Rivers that flow with power and force. Seeds that bloom and grow. Our bodies that break and heal. Our minds that solve and create. Our hearts that love. We are part of all that, There is no weakness there.
weakness is strength.
Weakness is strength when we ask for help. Weakness is strength when we seek to understand. Weakness is strength when we forgive. Weakness is strength when we risk intimacy. Weakness is strength when we acknowledge the pain of failure. Weakness is strength when we practice resilience, determination, and grit.
