Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

Weekly Wide-Awake: All rivers at once

All rivers at once
What is the body? Endurance.
What is love? Gratitude.
What is hidden in our chests? Laughter.
What else? Compassion.
Rumi
All rivers at once. That thought comforts me. Thinking about the power of nature, of rivers like the Ohio on which I grew up, eases my mind. It’s easy to feel powerful, anxious, fearful, and angry. Remembering what I know about rivers makes sense. They are body, love, laughter, and compassion. At once this week I have considered the healing power of breathing and what it means to be grateful for everyone and everything. I have even thought about lessons from dance classes of my youth. I have learned about the Stickiness Factor and art as a key to our unknown.
