Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

Weekly Wide-Awake: Celebrating August

Nature does not hurry. Yet everything is accomplished.
Lao Tzu
I celebrate August. Many things have occurred in my life in August that deserve celebration. As the calendar turns, so do my thoughts to milestones and to my journey. I have written about it this week. Completing a PhD. Publishing an essay in a magazine. The journey that is hormone replacement therapy. Serving my community. Publishing Gratitude Conversations – Volumes I – VI. My journey to become the cheetah I was born to be. Over the last few months, I have found myself turning to nature – the natural rhythm of the tides, the absolute majesty of leaves falling and storms passing, and the sun rising and setting to find solid ground in uneven times.
When I think about my biggest accomplishments, they never happen quickly. Their timing feels like the seasons – measured and perfect. They feel big like mountains built from small stones. They feel supported by roots of great trees.
