Weekly Wide-Awake: I, Too.
I, too, sing America.
Langston Hughes
The election air makes me think of Langston Hughes’ poem, I, Too. During election season we all sit at the table and sing and vote. People of all descriptions from across the country sit at the table and sing and vote. After the tireless efforts of generations of voting rights advocates, the song of America will be sung. Voting is the hope of the American democratic experiment.
The election occurs in the midst of everything that weighs heavy on our hearts. I turned to the thoughts of great servant leaders while remembering my own experience campaigning for Barack Obama in 2008. I looked to the words of John Lewis, Dolores Huerta, and Shirley Chisholm.
