Weekly Wide-Awake: Mini Lessons
I have participated in more than 10 Kentucky Derby Festival mini Marathons. I have learned each one teaches lessons. There is the lesson of the value in consistent training. There is the lesson of tradition and family. (That lesson is closely related to the lesson in coming home.) There is the lesson that we have already won when we put on the shoes. (That lesson is closely related to the value in showing up.) There is the lesson of grace and forgiveness that comes with age. (That lesson is particularly valuable as the years pass.) There is the lesson of friendship that walks beside you. There is the lesson of humor along the way. (That lesson is closely related to laughter through tears.) There is the lesson of taking stock — an annual accounting of where I am and where I want to go. (That is closely related to the value of finding center.)
Each lesson is a gift. Every year after the race I am sore (sometimes more than others). Even soreness is a lesson. Every year I debate whether or not I will do it again. Every year I recollect previous races (reminding me of the role the race plays in my story and my life). Every year, from wherever I am living, I go home for the race. The race is part of my rhythm. It is important to know our rhythm. Maybe that is the biggest mini lesson.
