Weekly Wide-Awake: One More Love Poem
I’ll count all my days,
From “One More Love Poem,” by Dunya Mikhail
even the nine months of days
before I was born, to say
this exponential, growing “I love you.”
What if we live our lives like one huge love poem? We tell the people we loved we love them. We do more things we love. We consider love as a response during conflict. We treat both friends and strangers with love. We create loving things — like meals, gardens, houses, and art. We view all love as an exponential, growing “I love you.”
A love poem life would be radical. Greed and hate and cruelty would have no air to breathe. Rose colored glasses would be more like kaleidoscopes where even broken glass becomes beautiful. All past broken hearts and grief and pain become the stuff of our story and our song. A love poem life would honor love — the full-throated, open-hearted, wide-awake, miraculous, earth-changing kind of love that would no longer be reserved for the page.
