Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

Weekly Wide-Awake: Telling About It

Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.
Mary Oliver
For this week’s Weekly Wide-Awake, I have selected a few things I have written over the yers as an attempt to “tell about” my experience. In telling about that to which we pay attention, and that by which we are astonished, we share our understanding and story with others. The more we share our understanding and story — however we do it — the better we all are. That is the foundation of wide-awakeness.
